What Is a Prescribing Pharmacist? How Bannerman’s Can Help Without a GP

Trying to get a GP appointment isn’t always straightforward. Sometimes it’s a week’s wait, sometimes it’s a phone queue that never seems to move, and sometimes you just need something sorted today. What a lot of people don’t realise is that help might already be round the corner. At Bannerman’s Pharmacy, our prescribing pharmacists can assess what’s wrong and prescribe the right medication, often the same day, without a GP referral.

Here’s a look at what a prescribing pharmacist actually does, the kinds of conditions they can treat, and how it works at our branches across Glasgow, Kirkintilloch and New Stevenston.

What Is a Prescribing Pharmacist?

A prescribing pharmacist is a pharmacist who has gone through extra training to become a qualified independent prescriber. In practice, that means they can assess you, work out what’s going on, and prescribe medicine for it, much like a GP would.

That’s a step up from a typical pharmacy chat, where you’d usually be pointed toward a doctor once things go beyond an over-the-counter remedy. A prescribing pharmacist can take that next step themselves: look at your symptoms, check your history, and write the prescription there and then. No extra appointment somewhere else needed.

Benefits of Going to a Prescribing Pharmacist Over a GP

There are a few reasons people are choosing this route more and more:

  • Speed: same-day appointments are usually available, so there’s no sitting on hold or waiting on a cancellation.
  • No referral: you don’t need to see a GP first or get anything signed off. You just book with the pharmacist directly. You can even book online.
  • Location: with branches across Glasgow, Kirkintilloch and Motherwell, chances are there’s a Bannerman’s close to home or work, often open longer than your GP surgery.
  • Everything in one visit: the prescription gets written and dispensed in the same place, so there’s no back-and-forth between a surgery and a pharmacy.
  • Joined-up care: because we already handle a lot of people’s repeat prescriptions, our pharmacists can see what else you’re taking and factor that into their decision.

None of this means the GP becomes redundant. It just means there’s now a faster option for the kind of everyday health issues that don’t need a full GP appointment to sort out.

What Conditions Can a Pharmacist Prescribe For?

Our prescribing pharmacists cover a wide range of common issues, including:

  • Skin infections and minor skin conditions: things like impetigo or infected insect bites.
  • Urinary tract infections: a common one for same-day treatment.
  • Sore throats, earache and sinusitis: especially where symptoms suggest a bacterial cause.
  • Mild to moderate acne: including reviewing and adjusting current treatment.
  • Hay fever and allergies: when over-the-counter options aren’t cutting it.
  • Contraception, including emergency contraception.
  • Minor injuries and uncomplicated wounds.
  • Medication reviews: adjusting doses or switching treatments where needed.

Our Prescribing pharmacists are trained independent prescribers. If something’s outside what can safely be treated in a pharmacy, they’ll say so and point you toward the right place, whether that’s your GP, an out-of-hours service, or A&E.

A Note on Antibiotics

Antibiotics come up a lot in these consultations, so it’s worth being upfront about how that works. Our pharmacists follow the same national prescribing guidelines as GPs, which means antibiotics only get prescribed when they’re actually needed, at the right dose, for the right length of time.

A good chunk of infections, colds and most sore throats among them, are viral and won’t respond to antibiotics at all. A pharmacist will explain that and tell you what will actually help instead. It’s not about being stingy with treatment; it’s about avoiding side effects you don’t need and slowing antibiotic resistance, which every prescriber takes seriously.

Other Ways Bannerman’s Can Support You

Prescribing is just one part of what we do. Our branches also run NHS Pharmacy First consultations for minor ailments, flu and travel vaccinations, stop smoking support, emergency contraception, blister pack organisation for people managing multiple medicines, and free prescription collection and delivery. If you’re on long-term medication, our medicines care and review service is worth booking too, just to make sure everything you’re taking still makes sense together.

Book Your Appointment

If something’s bothering you and a GP slot feels weeks away, it’s worth checking whether a prescribing pharmacist at Bannerman’s can see you sooner. Book online or give your local branch a call, and the team will let you know if this is the right route for what you need.
