What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is an illness affecting your respiratory tract, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a type of coronavirus. It first emerged in December 2019 and quickly spread worldwide, leading to a pandemic declared by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in March 2020. The virus is mainly spread through respiratory droplets created when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, or breathes, but it can also be spread through touching contaminated surfaces then touching your face, mouth, nose, or eyes, and through direct contact with an infected person.
Like most illnesses, symptoms of COVID-19 can vary and be mild or severe. The most common symptoms of the illness are:
- Fever-like symptoms and chills
- Coughing and sneezing
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Muscular or body aches and pains
- Sore throat
- Nasal congestion or a runny nose
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea
Most people will recover within a few days. However, some people, such as the elderly, infants, or those with underlying health conditions can become seriously ill by developing pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
