Preparing for Flu Season

You can usually tell flu season is on its way before anyone officially announces it. The clocks change, someone at work starts sniffling, and suddenly everyone’s talking about who’s had their jab and who hasn’t. If you haven’t sorted yours yet, now’s a good time to think about it.

Flu isn’t just a bad cold. Most people bounce back within a week or so, but for older people, young kids, pregnant women, and anyone with a health condition like asthma or diabetes, it can hit a lot harder. A vaccine won’t guarantee you dodge it completely, but it makes a real difference to how likely you are to catch it, and how badly it affects you if you do.

Why Booking Early Matters

Here’s the thing about flu vaccines: they don’t work instantly. Your body needs about two weeks to build up proper protection after the jab. So if you wait until half the office is off sick before booking, you’re already behind.

Flu cases tend to start climbing through October and really pick up by November, so getting vaccinated in early autumn gives you a head start. It’s a bit like putting your heating on before the first cold snap rather than shivering through it and regretting the delay.

There’s also a knock-on benefit that’s easy to overlook. Every person who gets vaccinated is one less potential case clogging up GP surgeries or A&E during the busiest stretch of the year. It’s not just about you, though obviously that’s the main reason most people book in.

The NHS Flu Vaccine

Not everyone gets a free flu vaccine on the NHS, and whether you do comes down to a specific set of criteria rather than just wanting one. If you’re 65 or over, pregnant, a carer, or living with certain long-term conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, you’ll likely qualify.

You can get your free NHS flu vaccine through us without needing to go through your GP first, which saves a fair bit of hassle. If you’re not sure whether you fall into an eligible group, don’t guess, just ask us when you book. Our pharmacists check eligibility all the time and can usually sort it out in a couple of minutes.

The Private Flu Vaccine

If none of the NHS criteria apply to you but you’d still rather not spend a chunk of winter feeling rough, you can pay for a private flu vaccine instead. It’s the same vaccine and the same standard of care, just open to anyone who wants the protection regardless of age or medical history.

Working with the public on a day-to-day basis, travelling a lot for work, living with someone who’s immunocompromised or simply wanting to avoid getting knocked out for a week are just some of the reasons people choose to go private.

There’s no referral needed; you simply book an appointment, either in person or by using our appointment booker and pay on the day.

What Happens When You Book

There’s nothing complicated about the appointment itself. You’ll have a quick chat with one of our pharmacists first, just to confirm there’s no reason you shouldn’t have the vaccine that day, then the injection itself takes seconds. Most people are in and out within ten minutes.

Afterwards, a sore arm for a day or two is normal, and some people feel a bit tired or achy. That’s your immune system doing its job, not a sign anything’s gone wrong. Anything more serious is genuinely rare, and our staff will talk you through what to watch for before you leave.

Appointments fill up fast once flu starts spreading properly, so there’s a real advantage to sorting yours out now rather than waiting until you’re surrounded by sniffly colleagues. Pop in and see us, book online, or give the pharmacy a ring; it’s one thing off your winter to-do list.
